Tabs:

Remember that old typewriter?  The Tab function is a holdover from the mechanical tab settings on a typewriter.  Use Tabs to place text in specified points along a single line of text.  Be carefull with the use of tabs.  If you are making long lists of text, tables or text boxes will provide more flexibility for editing text.  I primarily use text in creating programs for musical concerts where I list musical numbers and composers or soloists.  You can also use tabs to start paragraphs (however, you can preset paragraph settings on the ruler.)

Tabs can place text left, right, or centered on a point in the line. 

Tab Exercise:

We will use three types of Tabs:
  1. Left Tab at 1/2 inch
  2. Center Tab at 3 inches
  3. Right Tab at the far right of the page.

1. Open a Blank Word Document. Type:
"This is my tabbed document:"
Press Enter

2. Press the "Tab" key once.
3. Type: "Left Tab" for your sample text.
4. Press "Enter."
5. Double Click on the ruler at the 3 inch mark.
6. Click the "Center" button. Click "OK."
7. Press "Tab."
8. Type "Centered Text."
9. Press "Enter."
10. Double Click the Ruler at the far Right (5 7/8 inches).
11. Select "Right."
Select dotted leader.
Click "OK."

12. Press Tab.
13. Type "Right Tab."
