Tech Lesson 3-4: Using Text Boxes and Images in Open Office Present / PowerPoint

Standards:
Demonstrates understanding of basic technology and telecommunication tools

CSTA Level I Standard 4: (3rd to 5th) Use general purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.
CSTA Level I Standard 5: (3rd to 5th) Use technology tools for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create presentations, and publishing activities to create presentations for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Basic Skills:
ELA4C1 (h): Varies the sentence structure by kind (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences and functional fragments), order, and complexity (simple, compound.)

S4P3 Students will demonstrate the relationship between the application of a force and the resulting change in position and motion on an object.
a. Identify simple machines and explain their uses (lever, pulley, wedge, inclined plane, screw, wheel and axle).
S4CS3: Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures.  (c) Use computers, cameras, and recording devices for capturing information.

Objectives:

Students will type in and manipulate text in Open Office Present Text Boxes
Students will Arrange graphics and text to highlight meanings of presentation.

Sentence Types Option:
Students will select Fonts and colors to identify Sentence Types
Students will select or draw images to reinforce their sentence types.
Students will create a graphic organizer with Open Office Present / PowerPoint features the 4 sentence types:
Declaritive
Imperative
Exclamatory
Question

Simple Machines Option:
Students will create a graphic organizer with Open Office Present that features at least 3 simple machines and their uses.
Students will select Fonts and colors to support graphic organizer.
Students will select or draw images to reinforce graphic organizer.
Students will use backgrounds or slide templates to create a color scheme for their graphic organizer.


Process:

1. Students will use google to find the names and descriptions of the 6 simple machines.

2. Students write in their notebooks the six simple machines and a one sentence description of the machine.
3. Students create model of one simple machine using Lego Building system.
4. Students take digital pictures of their Lego Simple Machine.
5. Students use Open Office Present / PowerPoint to organize their pictures and text.  (One slide per machine)
    a. Students use text boxes to lable the following:  Force(Effort), Reaction(Load),  Fulcrum
6. Students use Slide Design, Layout, and Backgrounds to orgainze their slides.
7. Students save their work to the file area.
