Tech Lesson 04-4: Check Book Project:
Using a Spreadsheet
(Alternate Lesson: Charting Weather Data)
Standards:
Demonstrates understanding of basic technology and telecommunication

CSTA Level I Standard 4: (3rd to 5th) Use general purpose productivity
tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill
deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.
CSTA Level I Standard 5: (3rd to 5th) Use technology tools for
individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing
activities to create presentations, and publishing activities to create
presentations for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
CSTA Level I Standard 9: (3rd to 5th) Determine which technology is
useful and select the appropriate tools and technology resources to
address a variety of tasks and problems.
Basic Skills:

Objectives:
Students will use a Spreadsheet program to create a check register that
will calculate the total funds remaining in their account.
Students will identify column and row labeling system for spreadsheet
cells.
Students will enter money values and transactions into their
spreadsheet.
Students will identify the accounting system for negative numbers (red).

Students will use Average and Sum commands to process data
Students will make a line graph with temperature data.
Process: (Check Register)
1. Students brainstorm what they would buy if they made $4000.00 per
month
2. Students make a list in their idea books of the things they would buy
3. Students use Google shopping and Amazon.com to figure amounts for
their desired purchases
4. Teacher prepares handouts with a starting balance and following
expenses and additions:
Salary: $4000.00
Taxes: -$1500.00
Health Insurance: -$250
Electricity: -$100
Phone and Internet Service: -$60
5. Students create Spreadsheet to record check register.

Process: (Weather Data)
1. Students bring weather Data chards from the weather bus
to class.
2. Teacher demonstrates rows and column naming and data
conventions with Spreadsheet: (Naming, A1, A2, B1 etc . . .)

Assessment:
Meets the Standard: Students will have created and saved a Spreadsheet
document that records and calculates currency values that track
expenses and credits.
